Annual Dulwich Shakespeare Festival
The annual Dulwich Shakespeare Festival was started in our school five years ago by Ms. Dorrington and the Visual and Performing Arts Department and has now become a highlight of the Dulwich-wide calendar of annual events. Our school does a different play every year and we have established a strong tradition of Shakespearean performances at DHSZ. The play that our students performed this year was the comedy As you like it.
The Dulwich Shakespeare Festival was held in Shanghai this year. For our Performing Arts Shakespeare Co-Curricular group, the week leading up to the festival was Shakespeare Festival week. It started with three energetic and well-prepared performances of Shakespeare’s great comedy, As you like it, directed by Ms. Rebecca Dorrington. At the start of the week, the players performed in front of each year group of the school and all the audiences laughed a lot at the comedic, physical characters and the complicated love story.
The performances were very well received and appreciated and showed our students’ appreciation of the effort and time that the performers put into the play, especially our nine Year 13 students who have excelled themselves by balancing their studies, university applications and the time required to prepare for the production.
The group of seventeen students, accompanied by Mrs. Dorrington, Mr. Dorrington and Ms. Yang, then went to Shanghai to participate in the Dulwich Shakespeare Festival in Dulwich College Shanghai with students from six other Dulwich Schools.
During the four days of the festival, the students attended various workshops with practitioners from the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in the UK, and had the opportunity to watch the range of Shakespeare performances from the other schools.
Our students also the exciting experience of performing in front of the students and teachers from across the Dulwich group. The festival was very demanding for our students, both physically and mentally, in terms of their confidence, creativity, collaboration and English communication skills, and they rose to the occasion, being outstanding ambassadors for DHSZ.
Our students’ final performance of As you like it was very impressive and received resounding applause and very positive feedback from the other Dulwich school students, teachers and the RSC actors and directors. Once again, the Shakespeare Festival was a very rewarding, educational and memorable experience for all who were involved!
